It's a sunny day at the farmette and it's supposed to stay that way. Which is good, because Rachel is barrel racing in Markdale and I'm going to watch.
Yesterday, we made the trek to Stratford again. This time, it was Rob and I and we took in Romeo and Juliet - that classic Shakespearean tragedy in which things get miscommunicated, misconstrued, there's lots of swashing and buckling and almost everyone dies in the end.
Ok. That wasn't really fair. Although it's a good four hundred and some years old, the story stands up. The acting was sublime. The two main players were very convincing with Mercutio and the nurse putting in standout performances. There's nothing like live theatre to make you laugh and cry and generally feel good about the world.
The difference with this trip is we had some time between lunch at the Parlour Inn (yummy haddock for both of us) and the performance. So we actually took in the Art in the Park that they set up down by the Avon every Saturday. I overheard one of the vendors say that it's one of the oldest of its kind in Ontario - having done 52 summers in a row. Nice.
One of the the most intriguing vendors was a steam punk artist who made these amazingly intricate sculptures from found objects and materials. I especially liked the vegetable steamer turned into a turtle shell. Professor Millie Moon's Fantastical Contraptions is the name of her business, and Millie herself showed me the incredibly detailed house under the turtle shell complete with working lights and a spiral staircase up to the exterior second floor.
As a result, Rob and I will likely go to the Steam Punk Festival in Fergus on September 7th, which she was promoting. Cool.
I also took a swing around the gardens at the festival theatre and found a few goodies, including this huge succulent, which I've never seen before and don't know where I'd put it, but I think I need it.
It was a fantastic day. The weather was with us, the play was entertaining and the art made us marvel at how creative everyone is in this town. Until next week.
