Canada Day Yay

It's a hot one already at the farmette. Twenty-five degrees, and it's supposed to get to more than 30, with humidity up around 40. Heat warning in effect until tomorrow morning. Guess it'll be another indoor day.

We went to our local Canada Day celebration on Tuesday. We have quite an active Lion's Club in Durham that puts on the show every year. We went in the early afternoon. It was pretty hot and the crowd was getting really big, which is great for the community. We only stayed for an hour or so. But it was fun!

We got some ice cream from the Éwoyns, The Littlest Ice Cream Store. They have a really tiny shop on the main drag and a mobile unit that was set up at the event, so we got a cup of rich, lovely chocolate. YUM. You can tell Rob liked it.

The main attraction was the MudMen, a Celtic rock band complete with bagpipes.

Actually they do a lot of down east folk music too. Which got the crowd going. Think Great Big Sea meets AC/DC.

They've been around for 27 years, and the lead singer said that they had performed at Canada Day in Ottawa twice. Once with the Queen!

We have a spanky new baseball park behind the community centre in Durham that served as the venue. It's almost directly across (like about four blocks) from where we live on Douglas.

The Saugeen River runs in between, which is why we had to drive up into town and around the bend to get there. The colourful flat things in the background were the bouncy castles waiting to get inflated for the wee ones. The Lions also had lots of picnicky food (burgers, fries, etc) and a beer garden.

Everyone was decked out in their best red and white, and the pride of being Canadian was palpable. Especially during these times when the orange imbecile in the U.S. is threatening our sovereignty.

Anyhow. It was a big success. The entry fee was by donation only, and I'm sure the Lions made a decent haul. People are generous around here. Until next week.
