Farmette kitchen facelift

It's a rainy day at the farmette. A springlike 12C this morning going to 17C. Nice. We soooo needed the moisture. I could practically hear the plants growing on my morning rounds.

We had an eventful week. Rob's delayed birthday celebration (the real one is February 1st, when the snow is up to our navels) was in Stratford on Wednesday. At the same time, Kyle was fixing and painting our kitchen. Here's the result. The ceiling is crack-free, clean and a lovely shiplap colour. That's fancy talk for white with a yellow undertone. The same colour was applied to our doors (all four (!) of them) and trim. On the walls we picked Hawaiian Cream, a soft yellow that Kyle (of KS Painting Inc.) really liked. He said that most kitchens he paints are some version of white.

Gotta say that having the middle of the house in upheaval for a week and a half was a bit jangly. Especially for our four furballs.

Good thing it's an old house with lots of doors to keep curious cats out of the way. They were quite comfy curling up in our bedroom at the front or lounging on my oversized chair in the back sunroom.

Kyle is meticulous. He covered the entire hardwood floor with paper and draped everything that could possibly get splattered. He evened out the very uneven ceiling and filled all the holes and chips in the trim and walls. He taped around every single pane in our three French doors. He even replaced the ugly brass door knobs that I've resented for 14 years with brushed nickel knobs.

The job took longer than any of us anticipated and went over budget. Which Kyle apologized for, and we completely understood, given the fact that the wallpaper he had to remove was cemented in place and the wonkiness of all the surfaces. It was closer to a renovation than just a paint job.

We're very happy with the result and today will be re-hanging our pictures, the analog clock and big mirror.

Stratford was sublime, gotta say. We saw Waiting for Godot with Paul Gross and Tom McCamus in the lead roles. Highly recommend, although it's on a limited run until the end of July. The lunch was scrumptious, too at Mercer's, and the flowers around the theatre exquisite. Anyhow, I think I've blathered enough. Feeling fortunate for our wee farmette and the off-farmette adventures we continue to have. Until next week.

Gratuitous cat photo courtesy of Max, my friend April's feline, who was recently neutered, which is why he's sporting the yellow doughnut. He's also wearing a snappy summer harness.
