Frost is on the pumpkin and everything else

It's officially fall at the farmette. Got our first hard frost last night and yesterday, and we put the deck furniture back in the woodworking shop for the winter. The barbecue is now tucked up safe in the toolshed and we only have a few more chores before we can welcome the white stuff.

I took a quick spin around the property, shivering in the -2C temperature while snapping pics of the gorgeous paint job the frost did.

Here are some of my observations.

First off, the new greenhouse looks like an ice palace. The little bits of melt near the doors show how coated the wee building is.

It also coated the redbud that we're hoping will survive the next few months. The big blowsy leaves are wonderful shade on a hot summer day. In Guelph, we had a huge redbud in the backyard that basically made a roof for our outdoor garden.

The decorative oats on the right were tinged on the edges with crystalline droplets. So delicate and beautiful.

I love the way we can get freebie plants. Whether from friends or family, or transplants we already had. The redbud is actually from Guelph. We lost the original farmette tree to a hard wind earlier this year, and this a shoot from the stump. The oats come from my late friend Pat's back yard. The decorative grass to the right is from sister Sandy's bed. I actually have three of these clumps, and they are really showing off just now with their icy tassels and rosy/brown leaves.

Even the 'meadow' on the west side of the house that we've let go wild is pretty in its own weedy way.

Here's a dessicated Queen Anne's Lace plant coated with frost. Beautiful, eh? I like the legend around it that says the queen it's named for pricked her finger and a drop of blood fell into the blossom. Which is why it has a wee dark bloom in the middle of hundreds of white bloomlets during summer.

Anyway, there's lots to enjoy whatever the time of year, when you're at the farmette. Until next week.
