Fun at the fall fair

It's a sunny day at the farmette. Supposed to go up to the mid-twenties Celsius.

Yesterday, we went to the Durham Fall Fair. Things have changed on the fairgrounds and for the better. The two ball diamonds are looking very snappy and there are two new monkey bar/slide areas for kids to play on.

There was also good number of categories and entrants into the baking, sewing and floral shows...as well as a robust showing of fruits, vegetables and canned goods.

The quilts are the first thing we saw on entering the arena. Lots and lots of beautiful home made lovelies lining what in winter is the plexiglass shield for hockey games.

I love the unusual bits of art that people dream up to enter at the fair. Here's a plastic cow with peppers and basil entered in the "Companion planting" slot. I imagine the cow would eat both, if it were real and given the chance.

I love this origami lamp. Each individual piece is made of folded paper. That must have taken a lot of patience and time! I also really like this decoupage box with a Halloween motif of skulls and spiders. Cool. I would have given it first place.

Rob found this pretty spectacular elephant planter with a succulent that was blooming.

Gotta love the expression on the elephant's face. Kind looks like his brain is exploding. Again. Cool.

Outside, there was a wide assortment of English saddle competitors, barrel racing and a cattle show. A LOT of horses, cows and poop. We had to watch both where we walking and what we might walk on.

We chatted briefly with the young woman who owns this beauty. It's a Brown Swiss, and has the most unusual coat of gray-brown. Lovely eyes with gigantic lashes, too.

It was a great day - hot, clear and exactly what you want for a fall fair. I noticed that the organizers made sure there were lots of canvas covers for the wee ones (and the old ones) to get out of the blazing sun. Nice touch.

It's always fun to see what the local artisans, farmers and equestrians are up to and it always impresses me the amount of time and effort our volunteers put into the show. Until next week.

Gratuitous cat photo courtesy of Bea(trix Potter), who is coming up on her 16th birthday. She's the last of the Guelph felines, and hopefully this pretty one will be with us for a few more years.
