Fun Fair Day

It's a sunny day (13C going to 23C) at the farmette. I already have the first load of laundry in the machine and looking to put everything on the line to get that fresh air scent on our clothes.

Yesterday was beautiful too and perfect for the Durham fair. For the first time, I volunteered. From 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., I sold 50/50 tickets to raise funds for the agricultural society that puts on the fair. I was stationed right at the entrance to the rink floor, and it was a busy time. Right after the parade ended at 11:30ish, lots of folks, from the elderly to big and small families plus dogs and their owners came streaming through. It was a hoot, and the people were so kind and generous.

I also entered some of the bounty from the farmette. Surprised myself, with

a first for the white Kennebec potatoes. Actually, half the kudos go to Rob, who bought and planted the tubers.

I did better on the root crops than the flowers this year. A third for the red potatoes, first for Dutch set onions, third for red onions and a 'thanks for entering' for beets.

My gladiolus (purply one in the centre) got a second while the sunflower, grasses and hydrangea got a 'thanks for entering'.

The theme of the fair was scarecrows, plaids and pumpkins, and anyone who got a prize received a wee doll. Here's my wee haul.

I love our fair. For a small community of 2,500 souls, they put on a great show, with many enthusiastic participants. The hockey arena is the hub of activity and there were lots of livestock competitions happening down on the baseball fields, too.

While the prizes are nice, the feeling of community pride and being a part of something good is right up there too. Until next week.
