Birthday dinner with the family

It's a cool but sunny day at the farmette. Starting to be able to tell fall is in the air.

The world continues to be loony with Russia bombing close to Europe's largest nuclear facility in Ukraine and a mouth-breathing nutbar hurling vile epithets at our Deputy Prime Minister in Grande Prairie, Alberta. Cripes. No wonder people - especially women - are reluctant to run for office any more.

Anyhow. Sister Sandy and I and the family finally got around to our joint birthday dinner on Friday night. We met up at the Barrhead Eatery outside Markdale, which just happens to be an exactly equal distance from our two homes. We went north and east for 22 minutes from Durham, and the Thorntons came 22 minutes south and west from Lady Bank (near Feversham).

It's a great restaurant that came under new ownership during the pandemic in 2021. The menu is fantastic, offering up everything from fish and chips (which Rob ordered) to a giant mess of pulled pork poutine (Brian and Erin) to spaghetti puttanesca (Rachel) to the Barrhead bowl. Sandy and I ordered the last one - a mix of beet tops, greens, shredded carrots and beets, quinoa, and chick pea balls that tasted like a nice, light falafel.

We're trying to slim down - but drinking Prosecco and eating the balance of Rob's fries kind of messed that up. Screw it - it was our birthday celebration, after all.

Any how, a good time was had by all, as you can tell by the expression on everyone's faces. Here's a wee collage of pics I took through the thoroughly enjoyable evening.

All in all, it was a lot of fun to get together and relax over a fantastic meal. We'll be doing that again, for sure.

Here's this week's gratuitous cat photo courtesy of Fred, who likes to place himself strategically in the middle of the kitchen floor for MDF (maximum disruption factor). Until next week.
