Retro farmette

It's a dull, grey, rainy day at the farmette. Even the cats are sleepy. As am I.

This is about the time of year that I ruminate about the last 12 months...so today's a bit of a wrap up of 2024.

The year started with a rotten cold that I had for weeks! Good thing we got our second floor converted to the recreational room in late 2023 and installed the new recliners. They came in handy as a comfort for all those phlegm-filled days.

The orange boys seemed to settle in and enjoy the new digs almost as much as we did. You can tell by Calvin's (and Rob's) face that the room was up to snuff. Hobbes was happier than he looked.

We hosted a family Easter celebration on Good Friday. So great to get the family together, especially after sister Barb died in the fall. The happiness and joy of the party was soon lost when my best friend Pat died in early April. I still miss her so much. She was a gem, and everyone who knew her knows that.

Sister Sandy and I made a couple of trips to Stratford to see the amazing shows. First, we saw Twelfth Night, a modernized version of the Shakespearean play set in the 1960s. Then The Diviners, which was a revelation. Author Margaret Laurence would be extremely proud of this production.

Our BIG trip this year was to the Orkneys, and what a time Rob and I had! Billy the tour guide/driver was funny, knowledgeable and had excellent taste in music - 1980s alternative rock.

He also was nice enough to pull over and let us visit what he called the 'hairy coos' or Highland cattle.

Skara Brae was, of course, the highlight of the journey. Imagine a Neolithic settlement that's more than 5,000 years old. And think of how they lived on the shore of this wee island in the Atlantic.

Birthday celebrations were the ticket through the summer and fall, with Sandy and I and the family going to our new restaurant in Durham for our joint birthdays. We also made the trip down to St. Thomas for brother Dan's 70th shindig.

Finally, Sandy and I took a long road trip to Montreal a couple of weeks ago and met up with our great friends Karen and Leanne.

It's been a year, all right. Lots of high highs and low lows. But mostly laughter, love and being together with family and friends. Which is the most important thing, after all. Until next week.
