It's a sunny day at the farmette. Supposed to go up to 27 C. We're heading to a kite festival this afternoon, so I hope there's enough wind to get them up and flying.
Friday was sister Sandy's birthday and we had a double celebration at the Foundry 1872, a new restaurant here in Durham. She's two years and eight days younger than me. She was so tiny when she was born that mom said the nurse didn't believe her when she said she was going to have a baby. Audrey knew damn well what was going on, because she'd done it four times before!
From a preemie who had to spend her first few weeks in the hospital to a mother of two, gardener, housekeeper, semi-retired pharmaceutical executive and all round fantastic human being, Sandy is the best sister anyone could ask for.
We didn't always get along. In fact, we could be quite frosty with one another in our childhood. I remember hair-pulling incidents and 'bugger off' (and worse) coming out of my mouth a few times. Over the years, we drifted apart and got back together. I moved to Waterloo to go to school, then to Toronto for work. She went to nursing college at Seneca. We both hooked up with our partners in the same year - she with Brian and me with Rob in 1993. Cripes. Has it really been that long?
For Sandy, Rachel then Erin came along and the family moved from Toronto to Mississauga then the town of Erin. Rob and I moved from Toronto to Guelph when my work made the move.
We followed each other further north and wound up back in rural Ontario. Odd that, having grown up in Frome (a hamlet with a population of about 30), we would come almost back to our roots. Feversham, the nearest village to Sandy's home is pretty tiny, too.
Over the last dozen years since Rob and I arrived at the farmette, Sandy and I have reconnected big time. As you can tell from my blog posts, we do a LOT of stuff together. And we always have fun.
Here she is a couple of weeks ago when we went shopping at St. Jacobs market - something we try to do every summer. Per usual, she had to stick out her tongue and mug for the camera.
So happy birthday to the toughest, smartest, goofiest, most caring person I know. Until next week.
